05/23/10: 1 Dog - Wilkes-Barre, PA to Manchester, NH One of our ARF pilots wound up with an abandoned old Shih Tzu that was headed to the shelter. It was a neighbors dog that had to move and couldn't take him. Our pilot volunteered to take him so he wouldn't end up at Animal Control. The pilot got all his vet paperwork and he's in good health. He's five years old, black and white and about thirty pounds. We reached out to our rescue network and Journey Ewell of the Manchester Animal Shelter offered to take him and find a forever home. Thanks to Jeff and to Journey for helping this abandoned dog... |

05/22/10: 17 Dogs - GREAT ESCAPE IV
Down in Anderson, SC, is a huge animal shelter with easily 500 dogs in it on a day-to-day basis. In this economy, not many of these dogs will find local adopters. Fortunately, the women that run the shelter for the city are very, very dedicated to working with rescues and transporters to get as many dogs out of their shelter as possible and on their way to parts of the country where there is not an animal overpopulation problem and where the dogs will more likely find new homes of their own. But there is a huge amount of dogs and many end up on death row...perfectly adoptable...but not able to get out in time.
A few rescues in the Northeast have agreed to take over 30 "death row dogs" from the Anderson shelter, rehabilitate them and find them new homes. Now these lucky dogs just need a way to get from SC to their final destinations...and that's where ARF comes in!... |

04/11/10: 11 Puppies - Greenville, MS to Sanford, ME One of these litters was from within the city limits of Greenville, and by law, they would have gone to the Greenville shelter, which gasses. Scrappy Jack was attacked by another dog, after which the owners surrendered him because they did not want to pay the vet bill for his surgery. Local adoption is very difficult because of the mass overpopulation problem in Mississippi as seen by the many "FREE Puppies" posted in the newspaper each week. It was urgent these dogs be moved to ensure their safety.... |

04/03/10: 3 Dogs - Pikeville, KY to Lincoln Park, NJ These puppies were taken to a high kill shelter where they stayed one week before the white puppy was adopted, his two little sisters stayed behind. Another week passed and no one showed any interested in the two little girls.. Then the white puppy was returned to the shelter because the owner found out he was deaf, a death sentence for any dog in an over packed shelter. White Angels Hope in New York stepped in to take the little deaf boy, and when they found out he had a family with him, they wouldn't separate the three... |

03/20/10: 10 Dogs - Quakertown, PA to Penn Yan, NY The mom and pups were left in a fenced in area at a shelter in AL when the pups were only 2 weeks and the others were also dumped at the same shelter. This shelter has no heat or adoption program and have no idea what the breeds are they have there. They were calling a Min Pin a Doxie so if anyone came in looking for a dog chances of them getting to look at the dog that they were looking for would be slim to none... |

03/07/10: 2 Dogs - Sullivan, MO to Quakertown, PA Macie and Hazel, a bonded pair of female dachshunds, needed to be rehomed together. Placing a pair of dogs is challenging -- most people are just not prepared to transition two new dogs into their household at the same time. Luckily, the ideal home was found, but ground transportation from St. Louis all the way to Allentown, Pennsylvania was impractical... |

03/06/10: 2 Dogs - Rocky Mount, NC to Chicago, IL Lady and Champ had been living outdoors for many months due to a change in the family structure and priorities. Luckily, their family was very responsible and contacted Basenji Rescue and Transport (BRAT). The pair were no longer house trained and not guaranteed to be able to get along with other dogs. Because of this, it was difficult to find a foster home, but one was waiting in Chicago. Their travel time would have been at least 16 hrs by car with at approximately 13 different drivers, increasing the probability of escape. Transport by air was a must... |

01/31/10: 12 Dogs - FL & SC to NY & NH & ME
Muff is a little senior blind Shih Tzu who was taken to the local shelter by his family. The lady came into the shelter sobbing continuously, and said that she could no longer take care of Muff. It was evident by shelter staff that she was heartbroken over whatever situation she was in to have to give up her dog. She left Muff at the shelter along with his anti-anxiety medication and asked the staff to please find a home for him.
Kip is a young lab mix who was rescued from the side of the Interstate. The rescuer thought that maybe the dog had gotten away from some people running a fireworks store at a nearby exit, and she went to ask them. "No, he's not ours, we saw a car stop a couple hours ago and set him out." It was a blessing that Kip hadn't gotten hit by a car on the busy Interstate, while roaming along the roadside.
Jesse is a gorgeous little Lab mix girl who was sitting in a high kill shelter. A wonderful family in NJ, who had lost their cherished lab of many years, saw Jesse on Petfinder.com and were interested in giving her a new life. They named her Jesse after the SC state flower, Jessimine.
Chili, Nakota, Yankee, Polly and Timmy were all in the very overcrowded shelter and will be with wonderful rescues and taken care of until their forever families come along.
Scooter & Daisy are 9 y.o. beagle sibs from Florida that tragically outlived their owners. The husband went into hospice care & his wife died unexpectedly of a heart attack, leaving these two precious furkids orphans. The husbands dying request to his cousin Nancy, was to please pick up the girls from animal control and get them to safety.
Quimby is a 3 y.o. Dachshund mix, whose owners dropped him off at a kill shelter in Georgia when they were moving and he no longer fit into their lives... |

01/31/10: 1 Dog, 5 Pups - Rome, GA to Wiscasset, ME The poor mom, named Highway, had been spotted on a rural highway close to a shelter for several months. She was finally caught after she had 9 puppies because she wouldn't leave her puppies in the garbage dump she had them in but unfortunately 4 of the puppies died from a bacterial infection. This family was fostered and treated for over a month because of their illness. The little puppies really had a will to live and were finally well enough to travel... |

01/31/10: 2 Dogs - Greencastle, IN to West Chester, PA This American Bulldog mother froze to death. She had no food, no water, no shelter, and was chained outside with a very heavy logging chain. One of the pups legs were broken and healed at the shoulder. They have been treated at the shelter, but needed transportation to an orthopedic surgeon as soon as possible... |

01/16/10: 1 Dog - Wainscott, NY to Presque Isle, ME Jakob was part of a year long puppy mill rescue out of Missouri. He was one of 525 adult breeding dogs that the puppy mills felt were not viable any longer and was sentenced to euthanasia. When The Animal Rescue Fund took in Jakob, he was dangerously thin due to having several intestinal parasites for which he was not treated. Jakob was treated and now has his first real home waiting where he can be cuddled up in his own dog bed next to a roaring fire and with a person that is going to love him... |
